Come and hear poetry readings featuring poets Ghareeb Iskander, Muradi Bakir and Mohammed Kebbewar together with music by oud player Rihab Azar in the Dia al-Azzawi: Painting Poetry exhibition.

About the performers

Rihab Azar was born in the Syrian city, Homs, to a musical family. Her father, luthier Samir Azar, made her first oud for her and started teaching her when she was 7 years old. She became the first woman oudist to perform accompanied by the Syrian National  Orchestra for Arabic Music Rihab has toured internationally since 2008 has performed at iconic spaces in the UK and abroad.

Ghareeb Iskander is a poet, translator and scholar living in London. He published serval books including A Chariot of Illusion (Exiled Writers Ink, London 2009); Gilgamesh’s Snake and Other Poems, a bilingual collection, which won Arkansas University’s Arabic Translation Award for 2015.

Mohamad Kebbewar was born and raised in Aleppo. Immigrating to Canada at age 19, Kebbewar earned a degree in history from Concordia University before becoming a graphic designer. He recently published a chapbook with Grey Borders Books entitled Children of War. He is putting the final touches on his novel The Bones of Aleppo.

Muradi Bakir is a poet and writer based in Oxford.
