An Exclusive Online Talk for Members of the Ashmolean

Booking required

Exclusively for Members

With Francesca Leoni, curator of Islamic art, Ashmolean

Beginning with the contemporary Iraqi painter Dia al-Azzawi (b. 1939), celebrated in our current exhibition Dia al-Azzawi: Painting Poetry, this talk will introduce some of the most important figures and trends of Arab modern art.

Looking at the period between the 1950s and 1970s especially, Dr Leoni will also be discussing a selection of little-known works from the Ashmolean collection.

This is the fourth talk of our Illuminating Insights series of monthly talks.

The talk will be available to watch live on Zoom and a recording of the event will be shared with ticketholders on request following the event.

You can also catch Dr Francesca Leoni in an in-person tour of our Gallery 8 exhibition Dia Al-Azzawi: Painting Poetry on Monday 15 May. Details can be found here.

Introducing the Illuminating Insights series

The Illuminating Insights series of monthly talks, conceived by our Member Events volunteer team, will offer supporters an intimate look behind the scenes of the Museum's collections. Each talk will be led by one of our curators or Museum experts exploring some of the more unusual, little-known Ashmolean treasures, and including a look at current research projects and conservation work. At the end of each talk there will be a Q&A for attendees to exchange views with our experts.
