Ashmolean Director, Dr Xa Sturgis welcomes you to this final event in the One World online series, and introduces Imam Monawar Hussain’s talk.

Celebrating Oxfordshire’s Heroes

Imam Monawar Hussain, Oxfordshire's new High Sheriff and founder of the Oxford Foundation, talks about the extraordinary acts of kindness of local people and voluntary groups during the Covid crisis, and the importance of celebrating different faiths and cultures.

MUSLIM CONTRIBUTION TO MUSIC

Tabla Drums

This introduction to tabla drums followed by two short performances, takes inspiration from Amir Khusrau (1253-1325) a court poet and musician of North India, known as the 'Father of Qawwali’ - a devotional form of singing of the Sufis in the Indian subcontinent. With celebrated singer and musician Kaleem Raza, accompanied by Master Ijaz Klate on Harmonium and Zain Rashid on Tabla.

Inspired by what ‘One World’ represents, artist Lana Al-Shami talks about cultural identity, dual heritage and living in multicultural Oxford, then shows us how to make an identity collage.

TRADITIONAL INDIAN SINGING

Shiva Bhjan in Raga Darbari

Nilam Sharma, an Indian classical singer, performs this song composed by Pandit Vishwaprakash: a reflection of the divine infinite Hindu god Shiva.

TRADITIONAL INDIAN DANCING

Traditional Indian dancer, Pragnas Das from the Disciple of Guru Shrimati Tandra Bos treats us to a a wonderful display of Kathak (Lucknow Garana) style of dance. The name of this wonderful dance performance is called 'Bhavrang'.
