PAST EVENT

This was a special FREE weekend celebrating the communities and faiths of Oxfordshire through a dazzling array of activities, performances, talks and crafts for all ages.

For the first time ever the Ashmolean Forecourt was also a One World Food Market with a range of delicious vegetarian treats from Indian street food to hash browns, cheesy chips and vegan hots dogs.

Saturday

    Enjoy a range of delicious vegetarian treats and take a seat in our heated marquee. Museum Forecourt. 
  • Call to Prayer & Welcome  Speeches    12pm
    Begin One World 2019 with an Islamic call to prayer and welcome speeches in the Atrium.
  • Make a Star!  12–4pm
    Make a colourful paper star decoration for the festive season. Gallery 31, Level 1.
  • Baha’i Book Making  12pm & 2pm
    Make a simple booklet with hand-stitched pages and a card cover, then decorate with inspirational words from sacred writings. For adults and children ages 10+. Gallery 30, Level 1.
  • Gallery Tour: Highlights from the Islamic World  12.15pm
    This gallery tour of the Islamic Middle East Gallery will uncover some of the highlights of the Ashmolean’s world renowned Islamic art collection. With curator Francesca Leoni. Meet at the Information Desk, Ground Floor.
  • Family Storytelling with Peter Chand  12.15pm & 12.55pm
    Listen to exciting traditional stories from across the globe with professional storyteller Peter Chand. For all ages. Gallery 14, Ground Floor.
  • Yakshagana Dance  12.30pm
    Experience the vibrancy of Yakshagana, an ancient folk-art form dating to 15th-century India, with Dr. Benaka Karanth playing Ravana the demon. Atrium, Level -1.
  • Harmony Project Singing Workshop  12.30pm
    Sing songs from around the world with Arne Richards and help decorate a giant peace globe. For all ages. Lecture Theatre, Level -1.
  • Chinese Lion Dance  12.45pm
    Learn to dance like a lion! Try on a lion head, play the Chinese drums and cymbals, watch a demonstration about the traditional dance and more. Gallery 21, Ground Floor.
  • DJ Euton  12.45pm
    DJ Euton Daley will be playing music from around the globe between performances in the Atrium, Level -1. Also catch his chill-out lounge set in the marquee on the Museum’s forecourt.
  • Bhajan & Vedic chanting by Nandana Chaitanya  1pm
    Listen to traditional devotional singing and Vedic chanting, called Bhajan or Kirtan, from India. Atrium, Level -1.
  • Oxford Hindu Temple Community Centre Performance  1.15pm
    Members of the OHTCCP perform Bhajans, with Chris Hills on Tabla and Mark Bhajwandin on Harmonium. Atrium, Level -1.
  • Mindful Mandalas  1.15pm & 3.15pm
    Take time out to colour in a mandala - a circular geometric design representing the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism. Gallery 21, Ground Floor.
  • Garba Dance with Hindu Mandal Oxford  1.30pm
    Join members of the Hindu Mandal, Oxford for a performance of Garba/Dandia traditional folk dance from the Gujarat. Atrium, Level -1.

    Join the Wheatley School Choir as they sing songs about our world and how we can make it a more peaceful place. Gallery 23, Ground Floor.

    Learn how to play Mah Jong, a traditional Chinese boardgame of skill, strategy and calculation. Jameel Area, Level -1.
  • Poetry with Muradi Bakir  2pm
    Join poet Muradi Bakir as she shares about her heartbreaking and breathtaking experiences as a refugee of the Syrian Civil War. Lecture Theatre, Level -1.
  • Advent: A Journey Through Candles  2pm

    A short blast of North Indian Dhol from local Oxford players. Atrium, Level -1.
  • Sikh Turban Tying Workshop  2.40pm
    Learn how to tie a traditional Sikh Turban. Gallery 21.
  • Nepalese Dance & Drums  2.50pm
    A celebration of Nepalese culture with a performance of 3 Nepalese dances, with drumming. Atrium, Level -1.
  • Student Tabla Demonstration  3pm
    Join Chris Hill and tabla students as they play Hindustani tabla patterns. Gallery 33, Level 1.
  • Bollywood Dancing with Jay Kumar  3.15pm
    Find your inner Bollywood dancer in this interactive activity performed by Jay Kumar and DanceAsia. Atrium, Level -1.

  • Ancient Gods: Drawing and Collage with Fusion Arts  12–4pm

    Join storyteller Adele Moss for stories from the Torah, the Rabbis and folk tradition that celebrate that most fundamental of human values: hospitality. For adults and children ages 9+. Lecture Theatre, Level -1.
  • Islamic Calligraphy Workshop  1.30pm
    Learn to write in the style of the Arabic alphabet and have a go at writing your own name using traditional tools and materials. Jameel Area, Level -1.

  • OxfordShir Jewish Choir  2.40pm
    A performance of modern settings of Hebrew texts by contemporary composer Alexander Massey and popular Yiddish songs. Atrium, Level -1.
  • The Tariqa Burhaniya  3.15pm
    Join the Tariqa Burhaniya and learn a number of spiritual exercises which help to maintain positive energy and dispel negatvitity, fostering a sense of peace within yourself and others. Atrium, Level -1.
