Take a closer look at lamps and lanterns in the Ashmolean Museum's collection and make your own lantern to brighten up the dark evenings, with a simple craft activity.

Particularly good for 5 to 11 year olds, and their grown-ups.

This free event was streamed on YouTube.

Please have these ready for the lantern making:

  • 2 sheets white paper (A4 printer paper or similar).
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or craft glue
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Black or dark felt tip pen
  • Few teaspoons of oil in a jar or bowl (any cooking oil will do)
  • Paint brush
  • Earbud
  • Bike light or battery operated candle

This activity is not very messy but you may want to wear old clothes/apron and protect table with old newspaper or similar.

The event was part of the Oxford Christmas Light Festival 2020.

This lantern is NOT for use with a real candle or flame of any kind.
