A weekend of activities celebating the Museum's founding collections

Heritage Lottery Fund

At this event we celebrated Elias Ashmole’s 400th birthday year in 17th-century style. We were transported back to the 1600s during the festival weekend with period theatre, talks, quizzes and music.

All activities were free. The weekend began with a FREE evening LiveFriday, 7–10.30pm on Friday 27 October. CLICK HERE to find out more about this event.

  • Making Powhatan’s Mantle – Leatherworking demonstrations. 
    • Watch the process of Brain Tanning deer skins in methods used by the Tsenacommacah people of North America who made the original Powhatan’s mantle now in the new gallery “The Ashmolean Story”   
  • Gallery Tours: The Ashmolean Story
    • 10 minute tours of selected 17th-century items in the new gallery such as Powhatan’s Mantle, Guy Fawkes lantern, and Elias Ashmole’s portrait. Times: 1.30pm, 2pm, 2.30pm, 3pm , 3.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday
    • 12.00 (Saturday only)  Curator Talk led by Drs Alison Roberts and Eleanor Standley
  • Living History group led by The Sealed Knot
    • Master Hardwyke, apothecary - period poultices and cures
    • Demes Scientificus group - early modern science displays, covering Mathematics, Chemistry (Alchemy), Optics and Philosophy
    • Traditional woodworker
    • Coffee Shoppe 
  • Military personnel in 1680s uniforms on the Museum's forecourt
  • 17th-century Storytelling with Tanya Bentham.
