DETECTIVE WORK AND DISCOVERIES

Exclusively for Members

An Exclusive Online & In-Person Talk for Members of the Ashmolean

Drinks and nibbles will be served in the Lecture Theatre following the talk

With Catherine Whistler, Keeper of Western Art, Angelamaria Aceto, Researcher, Italian Drawings Project, and Ian Hicks, former Ashmolean-Getty Research Fellow

Travel back in time and discover how a little detective work can uncover the stories behind the Ashmolean's Italian drawings.

The Ashmolean’s collection is like a time capsule – offering up tantalising insights into the stories of these 500-year-old drawings, including masterpieces by Parmigianino, Annibale Carracci, Federico Barocci, Guercino, Carlo Maratti, Canaletto, and Giambattista Piranesi.

Who were the artists? Why were they created? How were they created? Where were they done? So many questions that our speakers can hopefully provide some answers to.

Let our Italian drawing experts, Catherine Whistler,  Angelamaria Aceto and Ian Hicks, share their passion for the Ashmolean’s wonderful collection of Italian drawings and take you behind the scenes to uncover their discoveries and reveal their detective work.

They will discuss and feature works by many previously unnamed artists.

The findings presented in this talk arise from our work on creating an online catalogue of over 2,200 Italian drawings for a global audience, thanks to a major grant from The Getty Foundation, and additional support from the Tavolozza Foundation.
