With Matthew Winterbottom, Ashmolean Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts

Have you even heard of Sir Lawrence Alma-Taderma? Now is your chance to learn about this intriguing eminent Victorian!

Matthew Winterbottom, Ashmolean Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts will lead you through the remarkable life and work of one of the leading Victorian painters of his day. Alma-Taderma’s work is most frequently recognised by his theatrical and often light-hearted paintings of scenes of ancient Greece and Rome.

In later life, this Anglo-Dutch artist turned his interest to furniture design, and he created a series of astonishing and sumptuous interiors in his two main London homes. In 1882 he was commissioned by tycoon Henry Gurdon Marquand to design a spectacular suite of Greco-Roman furniture for the music room in his luxurious New York mansion.

Matthew Winterbottom will talk about this surprising development in Alma-Tadema’s work and illustrate it with some of his sumptuous designs.

The talk will be available to watch live on Zoom for those not able to attend in person. A recording of the event will be shared with ticketholders on request following the event.
