ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES AROUND THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM

Free Event Exclusively for Members

An Exclusive Online Talk for Members of the Ashmolean

With Ben Ford, Senior Project Manager for Oxford Archaeology

Ben Ford has directed many of the excavations beneath well-known buildings of Oxford, including the recent massive excavations of the Westgate Centre. In this illustrated talk, Ben will concentrate on previous excavations in the area around the Ashmolean and will incorporate the discoveries made in 2009 when the Museum was remodelled. Excavations under the Museum revealed 12th–18th century features, including tenements along St Giles. Nearby lie Anglo-Saxon remains and a mass grave (possibly Viking warriors), plus a Bronze age barrow cemetery. In addition, the bones of a woolly mammoth were discovered under the Ashmolean forecourt!

(This talk is postponed from the talk originally advertised for September 2021.)
