ILLUMINATING INSIGHTS SERIES: ONLINE TALK FOR MEMBERS

An Exclusive Online Talk for Members of the Ashmolean

With Paul Roberts, Keeper of Antiquities at the Ashmolean

The Early Italy and Rome galleries of the Ashmolean have given wonderful service for almost 15 years, but need some updating.

We want the galleries to be a real ‘destination’ for families, schools and University colleagues, with improved footfall and dwell time.

The Ashmolean's exhibition 'Last Supper in Pompeii' which highlighted objects and themes such as the Etruscans and Roman Britain, and explored new ways of presenting them, has given us lots of ideas.

Now, we're looking at proposals for the galleries, including: a change of atmosphere in the Etruscan area; a major change in the Rome galleries to create a journey through the Empire; vastly improved lighting, fascinating interactives; and a regrouping of themes into new more spacious, group-friendly zones – Roman Britain, City of Rome, Home Life at Pompeii.

These improvement plans will enhance visitor experience through increased navigability, and reinterpreted displays, so the galleries become more accessible and engaging.

Join us online at this event to hear the plans and to give us your feedback.

The talk will be available to watch live on Zoom and a recording will be shared with ticketholders on request, following the event.

About the Illuminating Insights series

The Illuminating Insights series of monthly talks, conceived by our Member Events volunteer team, will offer supporters an intimate look behind the scenes of the Museum's collections. Each talk will be led by one of our curators or Museum experts exploring some of the more unusual, little-known Ashmolean treasures, and including a look at current research projects and conservation work. At the end of each talk there will be a Q&A for attendees to exchange views with our experts.
